Lake Eyre North (Kati Thanda) — Salt Crust and Horizon Viewpoint
Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre sits about 15 metres below sea level and covers over 9,000 square kilometres when dry — which is most of the time. Pull up to the shore track north of William Creek and you’re standing on a brittle, crystalline crust that crunches underfoot and blinds you in midday sun. In rare flood years, water rolls in from Queensland via the Warburton and Georgina rivers and the whole basin transforms into a shallow inland sea that draws pelicans, gulls, and banded stilts by the hundreds of thousands. Even dry, it hits different — the scale is genuinely disorienting.
Access is via the William Creek area and short station tracks. Most are passable in a high-clearance 4WD but check conditions — rain anywhere upstream can make the lake shore approach soft and treacherous fast. No facilities at the shore. William Creek Hotel is your last reliable fuel and water, roughly 10km away. Best visited April through September when temps are survivable and the track is firm.
Australia's lowest point. White crust, no horizon.
