Coward Springs Campground

Established Campground

This former railway siding sits at a critical junction where the Oodnadatta Track meets sealed road access from William Creek. The campground centers around natural thermal springs that bubble up year-round at a steady 38°C, creating an oasis feel with palm trees and green grass against the red dirt backdrop. Basic facilities include drop toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings, but no potable water — the springs are for soaking only. Expect company during cooler months as it’s a popular overnight for both Birdsville Track and Simpson Desert runners.

Access is straightforward on graded dirt roads suitable for any vehicle, though the final approach can get corrugated. The campground operates on an honesty system with fees collected in a box. Sites are scattered among the trees with decent spacing, though shade is limited outside the spring area. Summer temperatures make this place brutal — stick to April through September.
