Coober Pedy Dug-Out Town

Coober Pedy sits in the dead centre of South Australia’s outback, roughly halfway between Adelaide and Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway. The town is famous for its underground homes, churches, and hotels — all carved into the hillside to escape summer temperatures that regularly crack 50°C. It’s a working opal mining town, not a theme park; the mullock heaps and rusted machinery are real, and the locals have seen every kind of overlander roll through. Diesel and petrol are available in town, albeit at remote-Australia pricing. Stock up here before pushing north toward Uluru or south toward Adelaide.

The dirt roads around the mining fields require care — unmarked shafts are a real hazard, and you should stay on marked tracks. Cell signal exists in town but drops off hard outside the township limits. The Drive-In Underground Church and the Old Timers Mine are worth an hour of your time.
