Coober Pedy Breakaways Reserve Dispersed Camping
This otherworldly landscape of colorful mesas and eroded breakaways offers some of the most dramatic free camping in South Australia. Scattered sites dot the reserve with commanding views over the painted hills and endless Outback horizon. No facilities whatsoever — bring everything including water and firewood. Popular with grey nomads and 4WD tourers, but the reserve is large enough that finding solitude isn’t difficult.
Access via unsealed roads from Coober Pedy town — any vehicle can reach the main viewpoints, but the better camping spots require high clearance. Scorching hot in summer, perfect in cooler months. No camping fees, 24-hour stays only. The famous Dog Fence runs through the area, and dingo howls echo across the flats at night.
