Blue River — Lower Box Canyon Viewpoint
The Blue River corridor between Clifton and Alpine is one of the least-visited canyons in Arizona, and the Lower Box is the tightest pinch of it. The river crowds against sculpted volcanic and sedimentary walls here, with cottonwoods stuffed into the slot and the road clinging to the bench above. It’s a legitimate piece of wild Arizona that doesn’t ask anything of you except to pull over and look down. Water flows year-round in the Blue, making this a rare green corridor in a dry landscape.
Access is via Forest Road 281 (Blue River Road) south of the tiny settlement of Blue — a rough dirt road that earns its reputation in wet conditions. High-clearance is a baseline; 4WD and decent ground clearance strongly recommended after any precipitation. No facilities, no signage marking the viewpoint — you’ll know it when the canyon opens below you. Spring runoff and monsoon season July–September affect road conditions significantly.
Arizona's forgotten river gorge — raw and real.
