Brandberg Mountain Wilderness Circuit — Uis to Brandberg White Lady via Ugab River Terraces and Tsisab Ravine

Namibia's fiery island peak and 2,000-year-old art.

Difficult

The Brandberg Massif sits isolated in the Namib, a 2,573-metre granite inselberg that glows orange-red at sunset like it’s lit from inside — hence the name, German for ‘fire mountain.’ The circuit from Uis drops into the Ugab River terraces, where the track dissolves into sandy riverbed driving interspersed with volcanic rock shelves before swinging north toward the Tsisab Ravine approach. The ravine is the access corridor for the White Lady rock painting shelter — San Bushman art estimated at 2,000 years old, depicting a ceremonial figure long misidentified by colonial-era archaeologists as a white female but now understood as a male shaman. A mandatory guide from the Brandberg Community Conservancy accompanies all hiking visits; the 4×4 track itself requires no guide but the terrain earns its reputation.

Rocky, sandy, and at times brutally corrugated, this route demands a high-clearance 4WD with aired-down tyres, good bash plates, and a full-size spare. The Ugab crossing is dry most of the year but can run water after rare rainfall events — check conditions in Uis before heading in. No fuel at the mountain; fill in Uis or Henties Bay. Best season is April through September when temps are survivable and the air is clear. The Brandberg Community Conservancy manages access — entrance fees are collected at the site. Cell service is nonexistent from Uis inward. Bring all water; none is safe to drink at the ravine without treatment.
