Namib-Naukluft National Park — Homeb Kuiseb River Floodplain Dispersed Camp

Homeb sits where the Kuiseb River has carved a narrow canyon through the gravel plains and sand sea, holding back the southern dunes for thousands of years. Overlanders camp on the sandy riverbank under a canopy of ana trees — one of the most atmospheric desert camps in southern Africa. The canyon walls rise sharply, desert-adapted elephants pass through seasonally, and the silence at night is absolute. No facilities, no signage, no neighbours most nights. Access is via the D1982 off the B2 between Walvis Bay and Rooibank — the final stretch is sandy riverbed driving requiring 4WD and deflated tyres. MET permit required; available through Namibia Wildlife Resorts. Flash floods can close the canyon quickly in the austral summer — check conditions in Walvis Bay before committing. Best visited April through October.
