Flinders Ranges — Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary Ridge-Top Tour via Bararranna Gorge

Billion-year-old ridgeline with zero guardrails.

Expert

Arkaroola sits at the top of the northern Flinders Ranges in South Australia, and the Ridge-Top Tour is the reason serious overlanders make the 600km run north from Adelaide. The track climbs from Arkaroola Village through Bararranna Gorge — a slot canyon of billion-year-old pink granite — and onto a quartzite ridge spine that delivers 360-degree views across Paralana Hot Springs, Gammon Ranges Wilderness, and, on clear days, as far as Lake Frome’s salt flat. The route passes Sillers Lookout at 930m, which is where most passengers stop breathing for a moment. The drop-offs are real, the shelves are narrow, and several sections require slow, precise wheel placement over loose slabs.

Arkaroola operates the Ridge-Top Tour as a guided experience only — privately owned sanctuary, their vehicles, no self-drive permitted on the ridge itself. The rest of the sanctuary’s tracks (gorge runs, creek crossings, station roads) are self-drive with a 4WD. The area is also an International Dark Sky Sanctuary — the observatory at the village is one of the best in the southern hemisphere. Best season is April through October; summer heat routinely exceeds 45°C. Fuel and limited supplies at Arkaroola Village. No fuel between Copley and the sanctuary — fill up before you leave the highway.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive the Ridge-Top Tour in my own 4WD?

No. The ridge section is guided-only — you ride in Arkaroola's purpose-built tour vehicles. Private vehicles are not permitted on that route under any circumstances. You can self-drive the sanctuary's other tracks with a high-clearance 4WD.

When is the Ridge-Top Tour actually running and what closes it?

April through October is the reliable window — summer heat (40°C+) and occasional flash flooding shut operations from November to March. Even in season, tours cancel on high-wind days because the exposed quartzite ledges are genuinely dangerous. Book ahead but build in flexibility.

Do I need a permit or entry fee to access Arkaroola Sanctuary?

Yes. Arkaroola is privately managed and charges a sanctuary entry fee separate from the Ridge-Top Tour booking. Both must be paid — check current pricing directly at arkaroola.com.au as fees change seasonally.

How sketchy is the hardest section of the ridge route?

The shelf road near Sillers Lookout is the crux — single-vehicle width, loose quartzite, and unguarded drops of several hundred metres with no room to correct a mistake. Even as a passenger it's full-attention terrain. People with serious vertigo have had to be talked through it.

Is there any fuel or water available at Arkaroola Village before heading further into the Flinders?

Arkaroola Village has fuel and drinking water, but don't count on consistent availability — it's a remote outpost and supply runs aren't daily. Fill up in Leigh Creek or Hawker before you arrive and treat the village fuel as a top-up, not your primary source. There is zero cell service once you leave the Barrier Highway corridor.
