Sesfontein Fort Rest Camp — Kunene River Valley Desert Basecamp

Fort Sesfontein sits at the confluence of trade routes through the northern Namib, a restored 1896 German Schutztruppe fort that now operates as a lodge with a dedicated campground. The camp sits under massive Ana trees along the edge of the Sesfontein valley — shaded, relatively cool, and about as civilized as it gets before you push west toward Purros and the Hoarusib. Sites have basic ablutions, braai stands, and the lodge bar stocks cold beer. Fuel is available here — verify before you arrive, as supply can be inconsistent. This is the last confirmed diesel stop before Opuwo or the coast.

Access is via the D3706 and surrounding dirt roads through the valley — manageable for 4WD rigs in dry season. The camp fills during peak Namibian overland season (June–September). Book ahead if you’re hitting it in July or August. Water from the spring-fed fort grounds is available but treat it. Cell signal is effectively zero once you leave the valley floor.
