Palmwag Lodge and Campsite — Huab River Valley

Established Campground

Palmwag Lodge campsite sits on the edge of the Palmwag Concession, a 582,000-hectare private reserve abutting the Skeleton Coast Park. Campsites are shaded by makalani palms along the Uniab/Huab drainage, with ablution blocks, braai stands, and a lodge bar where cold Windhoek lager appears like a mirage. Desert elephant, black rhino, and lion pass through regularly — this isn’t a zoo, it’s the real Kunene. It’s the last place with fuel, cold drinks, and a bed before you commit to the Skeleton Coast tracks north.

Access is via the C43 from Khorixas — roughly 110 km of gravel, manageable in a high-clearance vehicle. The concession itself requires a fee and the Skeleton Coast permit to proceed north. Best season is May through September; avoid January–March when the Huab floods. Book well ahead in peak season — this place fills fast.

Last cold beer before the Forbidden Coast.
