Galvans Gorge — Kimberley Rock Art and Swimming Hole

Pull off the Gibb River Road at the signed track for Galvans Gorge and you’re a short walk from one of the Kimberley’s most accessible hidden gems. The gorge itself is modest in scale but punches hard — a natural rock pool fed by a cascading waterfall, ringed by pandanus and fig trees, with ancient Wandjina rock art on the overhang wall. It’s the kind of place that stops you cold mid-drive. Best visited early morning before tour buses roll through from the Mitchell Plateau road.

The gorge sits on Mt Barnett Station, and the nearby Mt Barnett Roadhouse charges a small entry fee — pay it, it goes to the Kupungarri Community. The walking track is short and easy. Dry season only; the access road and gorge itself can be impassable during and after the Wet. No overnight camping at the gorge itself — use roadside or station camps nearby.
