Devil’s Backbone – Wimberley to Blanco

The Devil’s Backbone earned its name from the razor-sharp limestone ridge that cuts between Wimberley and Blanco like a prehistoric spine. This 24-mile ribbon of asphalt and gravel clings to the ridge top, delivering some of the most spectacular views in the Texas Hill Country. The route follows Ranch Road 32 and then FM 12, passing through Fischer and over the Blanco River, with several pull-offs at Devil’s Backbone Tavern and scenic overlooks where you can glass the rolling ranch country stretching to the horizon.

Don’t let the scenic drive designation fool you – this is easy territory for any vehicle, but the real adventure comes from exploring the dozens of ranch roads and limestone creek crossings that branch off the main route. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though summer heat can be brutal. No permits required, and you’ll find decent cell service along most of the route. It’s Hill Country 101 – the perfect introduction to what makes Central Texas special, with cold beer waiting at either end.
