Creel Camping and RV Park — Copper Canyon Sierra Madre Basecamp

Creel is the last real town before the barrancas swallow you whole, and this campground sits right in the thick of it. It’s a no-frills, dust-and-pine affair — flat spots for rigs, basic toilets, and the kind of vibe where you swap notes with other overlanders over a fire before dropping into the canyon. The Tarahumara highlands surround you at roughly 7,600 feet, nights are cold year-round, and the pine smell is legit. It fills up during Semana Santa and summer holiday weekends — arrive early or call ahead.

Access is paved all the way into Creel via Chihuahua Highway 127. From here you stage for the Batopilas descent and the Urique rim road, both of which demand a high-clearance 4WD. Fuel up in Creel before any canyon run — options below are thin. Cell signal in town is spotty but exists on Telcel.
