Batopilas River Canyon — Urique Road Upper Rim Dispersed Camp
Pull off along the rough dirt track above the Batopilas River canyon on the upper switchback section of the road descending from the Creel area toward Batopilas. Overlanders running the classic Copper Canyon route camp here on flat stone shelves carved by erosion into the canyon rim. Elevation keeps temps manageable even in summer. You’re looking down into some of the deepest barranca country in North America — vertical relief can exceed 5,000 feet. No facilities, no shade structures, no services. Bring everything you need including water.
Access requires a capable high-clearance 4WD — the road is rough dirt and rocky single-track, deeply rutted in wet season. Rainy season (July–September) can make sections impassable. Best windows are October–November and March–May. No formal land management presence; locals are accustomed to overland travelers. Keep a low profile, leave nothing, and check in Creel for current road conditions before committing to the descent.
