Myakka River State Park Backcountry Drive

Wild Florida at its most authentic and untamed

Easy

The 7.5-mile backcountry drive at Myakka pushes deep into 37,000 acres of untamed Florida wetlands, prairie, and hammock. This isn’t your typical state park cruise – it’s a rough limestone and shell road that dead-ends at Bird Walk, passing through terrain that looks exactly like Florida did 500 years ago. You’ll cross Myakka River twice on old concrete fords where 12-foot gators are a regular sight, and wild boar tracks crisscross the trail like a game highway.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent rains – the limestone base stays solid but water crossings can get sketchy during summer floods. Any vehicle with decent ground clearance handles it dry, but high water means turn around. Park entry fee required but no additional permits for the backcountry road. Winter months offer the best driving and wildlife viewing when water levels drop and animals concentrate. You get authentic Old Florida wilderness just an hour from Sarasota, complete with sandhill cranes, wild turkeys, and some of the state’s most pristine wetland ecosystems.
