Icefields Parkway to Saskatchewan River Crossing Loop

Past the tourist crowds on Highway 93, this loop peels off onto forgotten forestry roads that wind through the heart of the Canadian Rockies backcountry. The route follows old logging and survey roads north from Saskatchewan River Crossing, threading between Mount Wilson and Mount Saskatchewan before looping back through the Siffleur Wilderness. You’ll cross multiple creeks feeding the North Saskatchewan River and navigate around massive rockfall zones where the mountains are still actively shedding stone.

This is serious backcountry requiring high-clearance 4WD and mountain driving experience. Creek crossings can be impassable during spring runoff, and the route is only accessible July through September when snow clears. Carry recovery gear, extra fuel, and be prepared for sudden weather changes at elevation. The payoff is pristine wilderness camping and views of glaciated peaks that most visitors to Banff never see.
