Larapinta Trail 4WD Support Road — Alice Springs to Redbank Gorge via Namatjira Drive and Glen Helen

Ancient quartzite and ghost gums all the way west.

Moderate

Namatjira Drive peels west out of Alice Springs and doesn’t apologise for any of it. The bitumen gives way to graded dirt well before Glen Helen Gorge, and the further west you push toward Ormiston Gorge and eventually Redbank Gorge — the trailhead for one of Australia’s most remote gorge swims — the more the road demands. The West MacDonnell Ranges are serrated quartzite ridgelines bleeding ochre and burnt orange across flat mulga country. At Glen Helen, the Finke River cuts a ghost gum-lined gap through the range that stops you dead. Push on to Redbank and you’re parking in spinifex country 260 kilometres from Alice with one of the best slot gorge scrambles in Central Australia waiting a short walk away. Rocky creek crossings, sandy drift sections, and tight pinches keep the driving honest without demanding an expedition-spec rig.

A standard high-clearance 4WD handles this route fine in the dry season, though a lift and all-terrain tyres smooth things out considerably. Carry at least two spare tyres and water for two days minimum — this is Red Centre country and breakdowns happen. Fuel at Glen Helen Homestead. The gorges fill with tourists on long weekends, so weekday travel rewards you with near solitude. Best April to September; summer heat is genuinely life-threatening. No permit required for the road; the NT Parks pass covers gorge day-use fees.

Frequently asked questions

Can a lifted Prado or 4Runner handle this, or do I need a purpose-built rig?

A stock high-clearance 4WD like a Prado 150, Land Cruiser 200, or Patrol handles the route fine in the dry season. You don't need a built rig, but all-terrain tyres, a recovery kit, and a dual battery setup for the remote stretch are sensible minimums.

Is Namatjira Drive passable in the wet season?

No. Sections west of Glen Helen become impassable when the Finke and Ormiston creek systems flood, which can happen June through March after rain. April to September is the reliable window — check NT Road Report before you leave Alice Springs regardless of time of year.

Do I need a permit to drive through or camp in West MacDonnell National Park?

Driving the route is free. Campsite fees apply at designated sites like Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen — around AUD $10–15 per adult per night payable via the NT Parks app or on arrival. Some sections cross Aboriginal land, so confirm whether an entry permit is required via the Central Land Council if you plan to go off the main corridor.

What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect?

The stretch west of Glen Helen toward Redbank Gorge is the roughest — corrugated dirt, sandy creek crossings, and limited recovery options for roughly 40 km. Tyre pressures down to 28–32 psi smooth out the corrugations; the creek crossings are shallow in dry season but check depth before committing.

Where do I fuel up and is 162 miles doable on one tank?

Alice Springs and Glen Helen Homestead (roughly 130 km in) are your only fuel stops — Glen Helen's bowser can be expensive and is not always open, so top up in Alice Springs and carry at least 20L extra. With a standard 80L tank you're fine; with anything smaller, carry a jerry can.
