Finke River Crossing Bush Camp
The Finke River crossing on the Old Ghan Heritage Railway route offers classic Outback dispersed camping beneath towering ghost gums along one of the world’s oldest riverbeds. Sandy campsites spread along both sides of the typically dry crossing, with established fire rings and natural shade. Can accommodate 10-12 groups comfortably, though the area fills during cooler months with grey nomads following the railway heritage trail.
Access requires high-clearance vehicle due to deep sand sections and rocky creek crossings. River only flows during rare flood events – carry all water. Extreme fire danger November-March with total fire bans common. Mobile coverage non-existent. Popular with historians exploring the abandoned Ghan railway stations nearby.
