James Bay Road Winter Route

The James Bay Road stretches 620 kilometers north from Matagami into the Canadian Shield, originally built to access Hydro-Quebec’s massive hydroelectric projects. Past Radisson, the winter-maintained ice roads continue toward remote Cree communities and the actual James Bay shoreline. You’ll cross dozens of frozen rivers and lakes, pass enormous spillways at Robert-Bourassa Dam, and hit checkpoints where you register with Hydro-Quebec security. The Eastmain River crossing at KM 544 is particularly dramatic—a massive concrete structure over churning water that powers half of Quebec.

Difficult winter conditions with temperatures dropping to -40°F and frequent whiteouts. Requires reliable cold-weather vehicle, survival gear, and emergency beacon—this isn’t tourist country. Winter access only from December through March when ice roads are maintained. No permits needed but register at checkpoints. Fuel available at Radisson and limited supplies at work camps. You’re entering one of the world’s largest wilderness hydroelectric complexes, crossing country that few people outside the power industry ever see.
