Namib Desert Welwitschia Flats to Conception Bay — Central Namib Desert Track via Moon Landscape

Ancient plants, moon rock, cold Atlantic fog.

Moderate

The central Namib is one of the oldest deserts on Earth and the Welwitschia Drive out of Swakopmund gives you a slice of genuine geological deep time. The route heads northeast from Swakopmund on gravel and compressed sand into the gravel plains, passing the Welwitschia Flats where individual plants have been carbon-dated to over 1,500 years old, then loops through the Moon Landscape — a rippled, eroded expanse of mica-schist hills that looks like a film set for another planet. From there, the track pushes south and west toward Conception Bay on the Atlantic coast, a remote, fog-drenched bay accessible only by 4WD permit through NamibRand or the Ministry of Environment, where cold Benguela Current surf hits empty white beaches and Cape fur seals haul out on black rocks.

The route sits in the Namib-Naukluft National Park and the Dorob National Park — both require a permit from MET (Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism). The track is doable in a stock high-clearance 4WD with sand tyres, though soft sections near the coast demand reduced tyre pressure. No fuel between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, so carry extra. Fog is dense April through September — navigation requires a GPS and paper map backup. Water is non-existent en route; carry minimum 10 litres per person. The reward is a stretch of Namibian desert coast so empty and strange it recalibrates what you think wild means.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Hilux or Land Cruiser handle this route without modifications?

A stock high-clearance 4WD will manage most of it, but sand tyres are non-negotiable — standard all-terrains will have you digging out on the softer coastal sections near Conception Bay. Low-range is required, and a quality tyre pressure gauge for airing down is essential.

What time of year should I avoid this trail?

November through March is Namibia's summer — heat in the central desert can exceed 50°C (122°F) on the gravel plains, making it genuinely dangerous. Stick to April–October; the coastal fog keeps temperatures bearable and the welwitschia look better for it anyway.

What permits do I need and where do I get them?

You need permits for both Namib-Naukluft and Dorob National Parks, issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT). Get them in advance at the MET offices in Swakopmund or online — rangers do check, especially near the Welwitschia Plains and the coast.

What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect?

The coastal approach into Conception Bay throws loose sand and soft tracks at you with zero landmarks to navigate by — easy to drift off-route. The Moon Landscape section is rocky and corrugated but straightforward; the real test is the final desert-to-coast transition where terrain shifts fast and navigation demands attention.

Is there any water or fuel available along the 140km route?

No water sources and no fuel between Swakopmund and Conception Bay — full stop. Carry a minimum of 5 litres of water per person per day, top off your tank completely before leaving Swakopmund, and factor a 25–30% range buffer for soft sand driving, which kills fuel economy hard.
