Wedge Overlook Road — San Rafael Swell North Rim via Fuller Bottom
Utah's Little Grand Canyon — no crowds, no fee.
The road to the Wedge Overlook leaves the small farming town of Castle Dale and crosses the wide open bench country of the San Rafael Desert before arriving at the lip of what locals call the Little Grand Canyon — a 1,000-foot-deep slot where the San Rafael River has spent millions of years carving through Entrada sandstone. The route runs roughly 14 miles of dirt and gravel, mostly flat across the plateau until the final mile where the road approaches the canyon edge. Side spurs along the rim give multiple viewpoints; the Fuller Bottom Road branch drops you toward the river itself, a rougher track requiring more ground clearance and confident line choice on loose decomposed sandstone shelves.
This is accessible territory for most high-clearance rigs in dry weather — a stock 4Runner or equivalent handles the main rim road without issue. The Fuller Bottom descent is where you’ll want a locker and some experience reading loose rock. Best visited March through May or September through November to avoid summer desert heat and winter road closures. No permits needed, no fees. Emery is your last fuel stop. Cell service is nonexistent on the rim. Dispersed camping is legal and plentiful along the approach; sleep on the edge and watch alpenglow hit that sandstone wall.

Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle Wedge Overlook Road, or do I need a lift?
A stock high-clearance truck or SUV handles this fine in dry conditions — no lift required. If it's wet, the clay-heavy dirt sections turn slick fast and 4WD becomes mandatory, not optional.
When does this road become impassable, and is it driveable in winter?
Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) are the sweet spots. Winter can work on dry days, but snow and freeze-thaw cycles make the clay surface a greasy mess. Summer is driveable but brutal heat — plan accordingly.

There is no reliable water source on this route — carry everything you need. Castle Dale is your last stop for gas and supplies, roughly 15–20 miles from the trailhead, so top off before you head out.
