Orinoquía Eastern Plains Circuit

The Orinoquía circuit runs deep into Colombia’s eastern cattle country, where the Andes fade into endless grasslands that stretch to Venezuela. Starting from Villavicencio, you’ll follow working ranch roads through the departments of Meta, Casanare, and Arauca, crossing the Río Meta, Río Casanare, and dozens of smaller streams that turn into torrents during wet season. The route passes through Hato La Aurora and connects remote cattle stations via unmarked dirt tracks that only local llaneros know by heart.

This is moderate difficulty but seasonal as hell — attempt it during wet season and you’re swimming, not driving. December through March is your window when the rivers drop and the mud hardens. High-clearance 4WD minimum, but the real challenge is navigation and fuel planning. Gas stations are 200+ kilometers apart, and GPS is useless once you leave the main roads. Carry jerry cans, a machete for clearing fallen trees, and patience for river crossings. The payoff is pure Colombian frontier: caiman sunning on riverbanks, capybara herds, and sunsets that set the entire sky on fire.
