Vale do Pati Circuit
Expert descent to Brazil's lost diamond valley
The Vale do Pati Circuit drops you into Chapada Diamantina’s most isolated valley via technical 4WD tracks that follow 19th-century diamond prospector routes. You’ll navigate the Cachoeirão descent — a harrowing boulder field that claims undercarriages — before reaching Pati Valley, where a handful of families still live without electricity or roads. The route connects Andaraí to Capão via mesa-top tracks with 1,000-meter cliff drops, crossing the Rio Pati multiple times where flash floods carve new channels monthly.
This is expert-level terrain demanding rock-crawling skills, armor plating, and winch recovery capability. Wet season (November-March) makes river crossings deadly and turns clay surfaces to skating rinks. Local guides in Andaraí know current route conditions — the track changes after every major storm. Fuel and supplies end at Andaraí; pack everything for 3-4 days including emergency food. The payoff is camping in Brazil’s ‘Shangri-La,’ where waterfalls thunder off table mountains and you’ll understand why diamond hunters never left.
