Ayacucho to Huanta Valley Backroad Circuit

Ancient roads through Peru's central highlands

Moderate

This mountainous circuit connects the colonial city of Ayacucho with the fertile Huanta Valley via deteriorating mountain roads that follow fragments of the original Qhapaq Ñan (Inca road system). The route climbs through the Cordillera Central, passing through traditional Quechua villages like Santillana and Luricocha where terraced agriculture hasn’t changed in centuries. The challenging descent into Huanta Valley offers spectacular views of coca plantations and the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Oriental, while the return leg via Acosvinchos tests your vehicle’s cooling system on sustained climbs above 4000 meters.

Moderate to difficult depending on recent weather — these mountain roads deteriorate fast during Peru’s rainy season. You’ll need high-clearance 4WD with good brakes and engine cooling, plus warm gear for the altitude. Avoid December through March when landslides are common. No permits needed, but carry coca leaves for altitude and respect the local culture in this historically sensitive region. The circuit rewards drivers with authentic highland Peru experience and some of the country’s most dramatic mountain scenery, far from tourist crowds.
