Vatnajökull Glacier Access Route F985
Europe's most dangerous glacier approach.
F985 punches across the Skeiðarársandur glacial outwash plain toward Vatnajökull’s massive ice face, crossing dozens of braided glacial rivers that shift course without warning during jökulhlaups—catastrophic glacial outburst floods. The track disappears entirely in places as black sand and house-sized boulders mark where previous floods scoured the landscape clean, leaving only GPS coordinates and local knowledge to navigate the constantly changing terrain.
Extreme difficulty requiring convoy travel, satellite communication, and vehicles equipped for deep water crossings and winch recovery. Rivers can rise several feet in hours, stranding vehicles or worse, and the route is impassable during flood events. Only attempt July through early September with experienced guides, multiple vehicles, and comprehensive emergency equipment. This is Iceland’s most challenging overland route, offering access to pristine glacier wilderness but demanding absolute respect for the dynamic and dangerous environment.
