Ussuri River Border Defence Road

Forbidden tiger country along China's edge

Expert

Built during Soviet-Chinese border tensions, this restricted military road parallels the Ussuri River for 240 kilometers through the Primorsky region’s most remote wilderness. The route connects former border guard posts from Dalnerechensk to Khabarovsk, passing through the heart of the Sikhote-Alin Biosphere Reserve where Amur tigers, brown bears, and wild boar rule vast stretches of Korean pine forest. Key checkpoints include the abandoned Grodekovo fortress and the strategic Bikin River crossing, where concrete bunkers still watch the Chinese frontier.

This is serious expedition territory requiring special military permits and escort — individual access is impossible. Convoy travel mandatory with FSB coordination, plus specialized vehicles capable of handling deep mud, fallen timber, and river fordings up to hood height. Accessible only July through September when military exercises permit civilian passage. Vehicle recovery gear essential given the remote location and complete absence of services. The payoff is witnessing Russia’s last great wilderness and some of the most militarized terrain on Earth.
