Sierra Madre del Sur Oaxaca Coffee Circuit

Cloud forest coffee cooperative highland circuit

Moderate

This high-altitude route winds through the cloud forests of the Sierra Madre del Sur, connecting indigenous Zapotec coffee cooperatives between Pluma Hidalgo and San Mateo Río Hondo. The trail follows ancient mule paths converted to rough dirt roads, climbing through misty forests where shade-grown coffee bushes grow beneath towering pine and oak canopies. Key landmarks include the Finca Santa Anita processing facility and the spectacular Chorro Grande waterfall, accessible via a technical side spur that tests approach angles on loose volcanic soil.

This is moderate terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD, with steep grades, tight switchbacks, and seasonal washouts during the June-September rainy season. Dry season (November-April) offers the best conditions, though morning fog can reduce visibility to near zero. Fuel up in Puerto Escondido before heading inland—there’s nothing reliable until Pochutla. You’ll experience authentic highland culture, sample world-class coffee at the source, and camp in pine forests at 6,000 feet while listening to howler monkeys echo from the valleys below.
