Playa Escondida Dispersed Beach Camping
This secluded stretch of Pacific coast sits about 15 minutes south of Puerto Escondido, accessible only by a rough dirt track through coconut groves. The beach runs for nearly a mile with soft sand perfect for camping, backed by swaying palms that provide natural shade. No facilities whatsoever — just you, the waves, and occasional local fishermen launching pangas at dawn. The surf can be heavy, so swimming requires caution.
The access track gets sketchy in rainy season and after big swells when sand blows across the road. High-clearance recommended, though 2WD makes it in dry conditions. Bring everything including water — the nearest supplies are back in Puerto Escondido. Popular with surfers during big south swells, otherwise pretty empty.
