Racetrack Valley Road — Death Valley’s Sailing Stones and Grandstand Loop

Washboard, sailing stones, and brutal beauty.

Moderate

Teakettle Junction is where you hang a left and commit. From there, the Racetrack Valley Road pounds your rig for roughly 27 miles of sharp-edged washboard and loose rock — this road has eaten more than a few sidewalls. The destination is worth every rattle: a flat, cracked playa surrounded by jagged mountains where massive rocks — some weighing hundreds of pounds — have carved long, mysterious tracks across the dried lakebed. The Grandstand, a dark inselberg rising from the playa floor, is one of Death Valley’s great lesser-photographed landmarks. Loop the playa on foot, then work north to Ubehebe Crater for a proper finish.

This road is manageable in a high-clearance 2WD if you’re careful, but a proper all-terrain tire on a 4WD rig is strongly recommended — punctures are a real risk on the volcanic rock edges. Carry at minimum two full-size spares and 5+ gallons of water per person. No fuel between Furnace Creek and Beatty, Nevada — tank up before you leave. Best from October through April; summer heat in Death Valley is genuinely life-threatening. No permit required, but pay the park entrance fee. Cell service: essentially zero.
