The Assekrem piste rises out of Tamanrasset into the Hoggar Mountains — one of the most otherworldly landscapes on the planet. The route covers roughly 80km of rocky piste through shattered volcanic plugs, lava flows, and dry guelta beds before clawing up to the Assekrem plateau at 2,780m, where Charles de Foucauld built his hermitage in 1911. The upper section is severe: loose basalt, steep switchbacks, and exposed ridgelines that punish anything with poor articulation or inadequate clearance. The view from the top at sunrise — a sea of volcanic spires igniting orange — is the single best reason to cross the Sahara.
A Sahara-capable 4WD is mandatory: think Land Cruiser 79 or equivalent, with a comprehensive tool kit, minimum 400km fuel range, and all water carried from Tamanrasset. A local guide is legally required for foreigners in this region and genuinely useful — the piste branches and fades frequently. Best months are October through March; summer heat at altitude is still brutal. Algeria requires a visa and guide registration with local authorities. Cell service ends immediately outside Tamanrasset. The hermitage at the summit has a small monks’ shelter; camping on the plateau under a Hoggar sky is an experience that resets your understanding of scale.

A stock Land Cruiser can physically make the climb, but this route demands an expedition-built vehicle — think full skid plates, long-range fuel tank (400km+ capacity), dual spare tires, and a complete recovery kit. A stock Tacoma or lightly built rig is a liability out here, not a vehicle.
When is the Assekrem route actually passable?
October through March is the window. Summer temps in the Hoggar regularly exceed 45°C (113°F), which makes mechanical failures life-threatening and the driving brutal. Flash flooding can cut the piste without warning any time of year.
Do I need permits to drive to Assekrem, and how do I get them?
Yes — foreign nationals require a tourist visa, a registered Algerian tour guide or agency escort, and permits coordinated through the Direction du Tourisme de Tamanrasset. You cannot legally drive this route solo as a foreigner; plan to arrange this well in advance through a licensed Algerian operator.
What's the hardest section of the piste and what actually makes it technical?
The upper Atakor volcanic core is where it gets real — broken basalt fields, loose rock ledges, and narrow switchbacks with significant exposure as you push above 2,500m. There's no maintained surface; route-finding across the lava fields requires experience and a guide who knows the terrain.
Where do you get fuel, and is there any water on the route?
Fuel up completely in Tamanrasset before you leave — there is nothing between town and the plateau, and 400km of range is the floor, not a suggestion. Carry all your own water; there are no reliable sources on the piste itself, and the hermitage at Assekrem has extremely limited facilities.
