Nez Perce National Historic Trail – Lolo Pass to Weippe

Lewis & Clark's near-death mountain crossing route

Moderate

The Nez Perce Trail traces the exact route where Lewis & Clark nearly starved crossing the Bitterroot Mountains in 1805, descending from Lolo Pass through dense timber and steep ridgelines to the Weippe Prairie where the Nez Perce tribe saved the expedition. This 60-mile route follows primitive Forest Service roads and pack trails through the Clearwater National Forest, crossing Eldorado Creek and navigating the notorious Wendover Ridge section where snow can linger into July.

Moderate to difficult depending on conditions — stock high-clearance 4WD minimum, but experienced drivers with lockers and recovery gear fare better on the steeper descents and creek crossings. Best tackled June through September when snowpack clears; carry extra fuel, water, and emergency supplies as cell service is nonexistent for most of the route. You’ll earn solitude in country that looks identical to what the Corps of Discovery saw, plus dispersed camping opportunities along Eldorado Creek and spectacular views from Wendover Ridge.
