Ouray County Road 26 — Owl Creek Pass to Cimarron via the Uncompahgre Canyon Rim

Owl Creek Pass Road has been used since Ute and early ranching days to link the Uncompahgre Valley with the Cimarron country, and the drive still feels like it belongs to a different era. Starting off US-550 south of Ridgway, County Road 10 climbs through Uncompahgre National Forest past Silver Jack Reservoir before topping out at Owl Creek Pass. From the summit you’re looking directly at the Cimarron Ridge — a jagged volcanic wall that locals call the West Elks’ little sibling. The descent drops you into the Cimarron River Canyon, a narrow slot where the road hugs the creek bank through tight cottonwood and box elder. The road terminates near the Cimarron area off US-50, making this a natural connector between Ridgway and Montrose via true backcountry.
The road is a well-graded dirt and gravel two-track — most of it accessible to high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, but wet weather turns the clay sections into a skating rink that will strand unprepared rigs.
