Ouachita Backcountry Explorer
Creek crossings through Ouachita mountain forest
The Ouachita Mountains stretch across southeastern Oklahoma like green waves, and this trail penetrates the heart of the range via old logging roads and mining tracks that date to the early 1900s. Starting near Heavener, the route follows Forest Service roads through dense hardwood forests, crossing Poteau Creek multiple times and passing remnants of old sawmill operations. The trail climbs over several ridgelines above 2,000 feet, offering glimpses of the Arkansas River valley to the north and the Kiamichi Mountains to the south.
This is moderate technical terrain requiring 4WD and good clearance for rocky creek crossings that can be impassable after heavy rains. Spring offers wildflowers but muddy conditions, while fall provides perfect weather and spectacular colors. Several established camping areas exist along Poteau Creek, and dispersed camping is allowed throughout the national forest. Bring tow straps and basic recovery gear—the creek crossings can be tricky, especially at Horsepen Creek where the rocky bottom shifts annually. It’s classic Ozark mountain driving through some of Oklahoma’s most beautiful forest country.
