Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area Backcountry Loop
Oregon's Sahara meets the Pacific
The backcountry loop cuts deep into Oregon Dunes’ 31,000 acres of shifting sand—the largest coastal dune system in North America. Beyond the main OHV areas, unmarked routes thread between 300-foot sand mountains and drop into hidden deflation plains where scattered lakes reflect towering dune faces. Navigation relies on compass bearings and GPS as familiar landmarks disappear beneath blowing sand. The route connects scattered camping areas accessible only to those willing to push through soft sand bowls that swallow unprepared vehicles.
This is expert-level sand driving requiring aggressive tires, air compressors, and recovery gear. High-centered vehicles are common, and getting stuck miles from the nearest road means expensive recovery. Summer brings crowds to perimeter areas but leaves backcountry relatively empty. Permits required for camping in designated areas. The payoff is camping on pristine sand with Pacific breakers echoing over the dunes and sunrise views across Oregon’s most alien landscape.
