Motitana Creek Road

Gates of the Mountains granite gauntlet

Expert

The granite sentinels of Gates of the Mountains loom overhead as Motitana Creek Road claws its way up switchbacks carved by 1890s mining wagons. This technical route starts innocuously at Holter Lake but quickly becomes a rock-crawling nightmare as you navigate mandatory winch points around Refrigerator Canyon’s granite walls. The payoff comes at mile 14 where the abandoned Whitlash Mine reveals Montana’s silver boom history scattered across terraced mountainsides.

Expert-level route requiring winch, recovery gear, and lockers—multiple vehicles mandatory due to exposure and remoteness. Best tackled July through September when snow clears the 7,800-foot ridgelines, though early season means creek crossings run high and nasty. No cell service beyond Holter Lake, so satellite communication recommended. What you earn: solitude, mining history, and technical skills tested against some of Montana’s most unforgiving granite.
