Maine’s Machias River Tote Road
Working tote road with multiple river fords
The Machias River Tote Road pushes 25 miles into the heart of Maine’s commercial forestland, following the river’s meandering course through stands of spruce and fir that stretch to the horizon. This working logging road crosses the Machias River four times via concrete fords built for loaded log trucks, plus another dozen smaller stream crossings that turn technical during spring melt. At Mile 16, the old fire tower on Schoodic Mountain offers the only civilized view for 100 miles in any direction.
This is proper Difficult territory requiring 4WD with good ground clearance and recovery points. The concrete fords are manageable in normal conditions, but side streams can wash out bridges between maintenance cycles. Best attempted June through September when water levels stabilize. You’ll need landowner permission from the paper companies — check with the Maine Forest Service for current access status. Pack everything you need including fuel, water, and full camping gear. Cell service disappears after Mile 5.
