Great Central Road — Laverton to Uluru via Warburton and the Gibson Desert Fringe

Red dirt, big sky, and no one for 300 km.

Moderate

The Great Central Road starts at the gold-mining town of Laverton and runs east across the Great Victoria Desert and the Gibson Desert fringe. Its name comes from the old Warburton Road, which was pushed through in the 1950s to serve the Weapons Research Establishment rocket range and later the Aboriginal communities along the way. You roll through Tjukayirla Roadhouse, Warburton, and Warakurna, then cross the Northern Territory line near Docker River. The Petermann Ranges and Kata Tjuta rise out of the flat as you get closer. The Giles Weather Station and the Len Beadell Tree sit along the way. The road is graded gravel and sealed in places now. Expect heavy washboard, bulldust holes, and big skies with nothing in them.

It isn’t technical. The hard part is distance and isolation. Fuel stops are 200 to 300 km apart, so carry extra jerry cans, plenty of water, a spare tyre or two, and a satellite communicator. Drop tyre pressures to match the corrugations, and watch for cattle and camels at dusk. You need a transit permit to cross Aboriginal land, and you must stay on the road corridor. The Ngaanyatjarra Council issues the WA permit and the Central Land Council covers the NT. Go May to September; the summer heat will cook you. You come out the far side at Uluru feeling like you’ve actually earned the view. Have a dirty day.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock 4WD or AWD wagon handle the Great Central Road?

Yes, in dry conditions. The surface is mostly graded gravel with heavy corrugations, bulldust, and occasional sand or washouts. Tyres are the weak point, so run good all-terrain or light-truck tyres, carry two full-size spares, and drop pressures on the corrugations.

When is the best time to drive it, and does the road close?

May to September is the window, with cooler days and stable surfaces. Summer regularly tops 40°C, and heavy rain can shut sections until they're regraded. Check Main Roads WA road conditions before you leave Laverton and again at Warburton.

Do I need a permit to drive the Great Central Road?

Yes. You need a transit permit for the Ngaanyatjarra Lands in WA and a Central Land Council transit permit for the NT section through Docker River. Both are free or low cost, but apply well ahead. Permits only cover travel along the road, so stay on it and don't detour onto community land.

What's the hardest part of the drive?

There's no technical rock crawling. The challenge is hours of washboard corrugations, soft sand and bulldust patches, and fatigue over 4-6 days. After rain, creek crossings and cut-up sections can get slippery. The stretches east of Warburton toward Docker River and the NT border are often the roughest.

How do I handle fuel and communications on a stretch this remote?

Fuel is limited to Laverton, Tjukayirla Roadhouse, Warburton, Warakurna, and Docker River, with long gaps between, so carry extra fuel and confirm opening hours and availability ahead. There's no cell service, so bring a satellite messenger or sat phone, plus extra water and food. Dispersed roadside camping is allowed at designated rest areas, but not near communities.
