Francis Marion National Forest Ion Swamp Creek Trail

Hurricane-carved swamp recovery roads

Moderate

Ion Swamp Creek Trail cuts through the heart of Francis Marion’s recovering forest, where Hurricane Hugo’s 1989 devastation still shapes the landscape. The route follows old timber salvage roads and swamp access routes, winding through dense palmetto understory and crossing Ion Swamp Creek multiple times on submerged concrete slabs. Key waypoints include the old CCC camp foundation ruins and the technical crossing at Huger Creek confluence where the trail gets properly sketchy in high water.

This is moderate technical territory requiring high-clearance 4WD with recovery gear — those creek crossings can turn nasty fast after rain. Best tackled in dry season (November through March) when water levels drop and the mosquitoes ease up. No permits needed, just check in with Witherbee Ranger Station for current conditions. You’ll earn your stripes on this one, plus some genuine lowcountry swamp skills that’ll serve you well elsewhere.
