Forestry Trunk Road — Hwy 734 Crimson Lake to Rocky Mountain House North (Alberta)
Foothills gravel through logging and boreal.
The stretch of Highway 734 north of Rocky Mountain House toward Crimson Lake is classic Alberta Forestry Trunk Road territory — wide open skies, dense spruce stands, and gravel that goes soft fast after rain. You’ll thread through active timber leases and quiet provincial recreation areas, with the North Saskatchewan River drainage pulling at you from the west the whole time. The road hooks past several unnamed creek crossings and dispersed camping pull-offs before spitting you out near the Crimson Lake Provincial Park boundary. Watch for logging trucks on the blind crests — they own the road and they know it.
This is a moderate run, but wet conditions push it toward difficult fast. High-clearance 4WD is the minimum sensible choice, and a set of all-terrains will save your hide when the clay gets going. Fuel up in Rocky Mountain House — there’s nothing out here. Summer and early fall are the sweet spot; spring thaw turns the shoulder roads to axle-deep mud. Cell service drops out almost immediately north of town. What you get is solitude, good moose country, and a genuine taste of Alberta’s working foothills before the peaks show up.
