Estrada Parque Transpantaneira Norte

Pantanal wetlands wildlife highway on floating bridges

Moderate

The Transpantaneira Norte starts where the asphalt ends at Poconé and plunges 147 kilometers into the heart of Brazil’s Pantanal wetlands on a raised dirt causeway that floats above seasonal floods. This engineering marvel crosses 126 wooden bridges over channels, streams, and lagoons while passing through working cattle fazendas where jaguars hunt caimans and hyacinth macaws roost in palm groves. The road terminates at Porto Jofre on the Cuiabá River, gateway to the Pantanal’s richest wildlife corridors.

Moderate difficulty due to bridge conditions and seasonal flooding rather than technical terrain. Any high-clearance 4WD handles this route, though spare parts and recovery gear are essential given the remote location. Best driven during dry season (May-September) when bridges are most stable and wildlife concentrates around remaining water sources. No permits required but fuel up in Poconé — no services for 147km. The payoff is unmatched wildlife viewing: jaguars, giant otters, anacondas, and over 650 bird species in one of South America’s most accessible wilderness areas.
