Desoto National Forest Black Creek Wilderness Fire Road 402

Sand road to Mississippi's only wilderness boundary

Moderate

Fire Road 402 cuts deep into the longleaf pine country where Black Creek runs wild through the heart of Mississippi’s only federally designated wilderness. This sandy forest road winds 8 miles from Highway 49 through classic Gulf Coast pine savanna before dead-ending at the wilderness boundary, where hikers pick up foot trails but wheels stop cold. You’ll cross Tuxachanie Creek twice on concrete slabs that can get slick when wet, and the road surface alternates between deep sand pockets that’ll bog down anything without momentum and hardpacked clay sections that turn greasy after rain.

Moderate difficulty if you know sand driving — otherwise it’ll humble you quick. Any stock 4WD with proper tire pressure will handle it, but aired-down tires are mandatory in summer when the sand gets loose. Best tackled fall through spring when the ground firms up and the bugs back off. No permits needed for the road itself, but camping requires heading to nearby campgrounds. What you get is genuine Southern wilderness access and some of the best remaining longleaf pine ecosystem in the state, plus solitude that’s hard to find this close to the coast.
