Crescent Lake NWR Backcountry Circuit

Wildlife refuge roads through Nebraska's wetland jewel

Easy

Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge’s backcountry circuit opens a 28-mile loop through some of Nebraska’s most pristine wetland habitat, accessible only by high-clearance vehicle on designated refuge roads. The route winds past Island Lake, Hackberry Lake, and the remote Blue Creek area where trumpeter swans nest and sandhill cranes gather by the thousands during migration. The notorious Goose Lake approach at mile 15 challenges drivers with soft sand and seasonal flooding.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent weather, requiring high-clearance but not necessarily 4WD in dry conditions. Spring and fall offer peak wildlife viewing but also the most challenging road conditions. The refuge strictly prohibits off-road travel and camping, but the wildlife viewing opportunities are unmatched in Nebraska. Check with refuge headquarters for current road conditions and seasonal closures, and bring binoculars for the show. Fuel and supplies available in Lakeside or Oshkosh.
