Caucasus Military Highway (Georgian Military Road)

200-year-old military route across the Caucasus

Moderate

The Georgian Military Highway has been the primary route across the Caucasus Mountains for over 200 years, climbing from Vladikavkaz through the Darial Gorge and over the Cross Pass at 2,379 meters before descending into Georgia. Built by Russian military engineers in the early 1800s, this dramatic route follows ancient trade paths through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the region, passing medieval watchtowers, alpine lakes, and the famous Gergeti Trinity Church perched impossibly high above the Aragvi River valley.

While the main highway is paved, the truly rewarding driving lies on the dozens of side tracks that branch off into alpine valleys and abandoned Soviet mining camps. A capable 4WD opens access to high mountain lakes, remote monasteries, and technical passes that’ll test your driving skills. Best driven May through October when snow clears the high passes. Fuel and supplies readily available in Vladikavkaz and the Georgian border towns. The combination of dramatic scenery, rich history, and excellent side adventures makes this one of Russia’s most rewarding mountain drives.
