Cape Hatteras National Seashore Beach Driving Trail
Where land meets legend
Seventy miles of Atlantic beach stretch from Oregon Inlet to Ocracoke, but don’t let the scenery fool you—this sand can swallow a truck faster than a nor’easter hits the Banks. ORV Route 12 follows the waterline through Cape Point, where Diamond Shoals create the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” and shifting sand dunes remake the trail daily. The notorious S-curves near Buxton Woods separate tourists from serious beach drivers, especially during spring tides when the Atlantic creeps right up to the dune line.
Street-legal 4WD required with aired-down tires (15-20 PSI), recovery gear, and an ORV permit. Avoid summer crowds and nesting season closures by hitting it fall through early spring. Bring everything you need—water, fuel, food—because once you’re past Avon, it’s just you, the lighthouse, and whatever the ocean decides to throw at you. The fishing’s legendary, but the sand demands respect.
