Bolinas Ridge Road — Fairfax to Olema via the Marin Headlands Ridgeline

Bolinas Ridge Road is the kind of route that sneaks up on you. You’ll climb out of Fairfax on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, turn onto the ridge fire road managed by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and spend 12 miles on a spine that looks down on Tomales Bay to the west and the inland Marin hills to the east. On a clear morning the Pacific glitters through the coastal fog below you. The road surface is packed dirt with exposed root sections, minor erosion ruts, and a few off-camber shelf sections. It’s not technical, but the exposure is real and the surface gets genuinely slippery in the wet season. The California buckeye groves along the descent toward Olema are worth the drive alone.
This is a high-clearance road rather than a rock-crawler route — a capable stock 4WD or even an aggressive AWD crossover handles it in dry conditions. The bigger challenge is the narrow track and the cyclists who share it. No overnight camping on the ridge itself; established campgrounds at Point Reyes National Seashore nearby. No permit required for the drive. Best season is April through November; winter rains wash out sections and close the gate unpredictably. Fuel in Fairfax before you head up — services on the far end in Olema are limited to a small general store.

Yes. The trail is a maintained fire road with no major obstacles. Stock high-clearance trucks and SUVs handle it fine. A lifted rig is overkill here — a Subaru Outback with decent clearance can make it in dry conditions.
