Bloody Island Road

Historic massacre site turned mountain backcountry loop

Moderate

Bloody Island Road winds through the mountains east of Clear Lake, named for the 1850 massacre where U.S. cavalry slaughtered over 100 Pomo Indians on what was then an island in Clear Lake. The modern trail follows old logging roads and fire breaks along ridgelines between Snow Mountain Wilderness and Cache Creek, passing active cattle operations and abandoned homesteads. Hull Mountain lookout at 6,873 feet offers panoramic views across the Coast Range, while scattered mine workings remind you this country once produced mercury and chromite for the war effort.

Easy to Moderate difficulty depending on recent weather — winter rains turn clay sections into axle-deep soup, while summer brings fire closures and extreme heat. Any high-clearance vehicle handles dry conditions, but 4WD helps in wet weather. Best access runs May through October, avoiding both mud season and fire season. No permits required for day use, but check current forest closures before heading out. Limited dispersed camping available, though most spots lack water. Cell service spotty to nonexistent. This is proper backcountry without the technical challenges — perfect for testing gear or escaping civilization for a weekend.
