Baffin Island Mining Road (Mary River to Pond Inlet)
Arctic mining road through polar bear country
The Mary River mining road cuts 100 kilometers across Baffin Island’s tundra, connecting the world’s northernmost iron ore mine with the hamlet of Pond Inlet on Eclipse Sound. Built to withstand minus-50 temperatures and permafrost heave, this industrial haul road crosses landscapes where polar bears hunt and caribou migrate along routes unchanged for millennia. The road passes close to ancient Thule archaeological sites and offers unobstructed views across Bylot Island and the Northwest Passage.
Any sturdy vehicle can handle the graded gravel surface during summer, but services are non-existent and weather changes rapidly. Arctic conditions require extensive preparation: emergency shelter, extra fuel, and satellite communication are essential. Access requires flying into Pond Inlet, making this expedition-level overlanding. The reward is experiencing one of Canada’s most remote industrial roads while witnessing Arctic wildlife and traditional Inuit culture in one of the world’s last pristine wilderness areas.
