Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center
The visitor center sits at the entrance to one of Oklahoma’s premier wilderness areas, surrounded by ancient granite domes and native prairie. Inside you’ll find detailed trail maps, current conditions on backcountry roads, and displays on the refuge’s free-roaming bison, elk, and longhorn herds. Rangers here know which rough roads are passable and where wildlife congregates by season.
The center anchors a network of primitive roads that wind through 59,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie and oak savannas. Most routes require high-clearance vehicles, especially after rain when the red clay gets slick. Check here for seasonal road closures and hunting area restrictions that can shut down entire sections.
