White House Ruin Overlook — Canyon de Chelly North Rim

White House Ruin is the most iconic Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwelling in Canyon de Chelly, built into a natural alcove roughly 500 feet above the canyon floor. The overlook off North Rim Drive gives you a striking elevated view of the structure — two-story mud and stone rooms, white plaster still visible on the upper section. It’s one of those places that makes you stop mid-sentence. The trail down (2.5 miles round trip) is the only self-guided hike permitted in the monument, descending via switchbacks to the canyon floor and crossing the wash.

North Rim Drive is paved. The overlook parking area is well-signed off the main rim road. The trail to the floor is moderately strenuous — sandy wash crossing at the bottom can be deep after rain. No permit needed for White House Trail specifically, but respect that you’re on Navajo Nation land; don’t wander beyond the designated trail. Best light on the ruin is mid-morning.
