The Watchman Lookout sits perched on the western rim of Crater Lake at 8,013 feet, one of the few remaining staffed fire lookouts in Oregon. The 35-foot wooden tower dates to 1932 and provides sweeping views across the lake’s impossibly blue waters to Mount Scott and the Phantom Ship. It’s accessible via a steep but short 0.8-mile trail from the Watchman Overlook parking area along Rim Drive.
The lookout is typically staffed from late June through September, and visitors can often chat with the fire spotter on duty. Snow closes Rim Drive and the trail from October to late June most years. The trail gains 420 feet of elevation over rocky terrain — bring water and expect wind at the exposed summit.
